Have you ever walked into an engineering University lecture? The first thing you’ll notice is the overwhelming smell of aftershave and then the realisation that there are barely any female students in the room. Why is it that girls don’t apply for engineering? The ‘Pink Aisle’ in a toy store is the perfect description of what we throw our young girls into and engineer Debbie Sterling believes it is the toys we play with that makes us girls lose interest in maths and science at such an early age.
Think about it. Have you ever seen a construction kit for girls? I have definitely been caught red-handed searching the ‘Blue Aisle’ for some Lego or Geomag when I was a kid! Debbie Sterling has brought us a solution in the form of a toy called Goldie Blox!
Goldie Blox is a creative girl who likes to invent and never lets failure get in the way of that! She is a role model for the young girls of this generation and encourages them to build, discover and, most importantly, never give up! The toy ingeniously involves reading and building to get young girls to solve basic engineering problems. The simple mechanisms learnt through the toy does not only stimulate interest in maths and engineering, but also develops spacial awareness skills.
It is the toy I dreamed of as a kid! And maybe, just maybe, the problem isn’t taking the girl out of the tutu, but rather giving her the tools to create her own world! With tutu or without! So lets get some girls to fill up those lecture seats in the engineering department and show the world that we can be more than just a princess!

We need to stop gender bias not only in the toy shops but in the primary schools, so that teachers encourage girls to design and build as well as to play with dolls and toy kitchens. Toys ‘r’ us are NOT for us, for our intelligent female children, for those who also want to be firefighters, police officers and engineers. So looking forward to reading about and seeing more of your visionary ideas, toys that stimulate creativity and inspire projects for the 21st century female!
